Founded in 1949, the present clubhouse was moved from Bury itself to a neighbouring village where a railway minded farmer kindly allowed access to a spare pig shed for a nominal rent!
The permanent club layout was originally built to represent GER action in East Anglia during the 1950’s. The 00 scale 30ft x 20ft layout, with two main terminuses and a branch station based on Felixstowe, would work to a sequenced timetable. This sequence could take many weeks to complete through an atmosphere heavily laden with cigarette smoke!
As years pass, sadly along with members, the club has tried to bring itself into the present century. Gone has the smoke, for health and safety reasons. The large end to end layout has been transformed into a simple figure of eight design, some of the original buildings have been retained along with the Abbotsford terminus, which was based on the Bury St Edmunds Station with its two fine lift towers. Gone also is the sequenced running allowing members to bring their own stock along for a run.
Much praise must go to the late Norman Willis who was at the birth of the club and brought along considerable talent. Although he was a very staunch GWR man, having been born in Swindon, he also had much interest in the G.E. Company. His talents are still very much in evidence at the club today, his buildings, scenery and detailed loco and rolling stock is still an inspiration to us all.
Over recent years the club has seen a steady growth in membership to almost 40 members today. With that growth it became necessary to update and expand our facilities, which amongst other things, has seen us doing our own barn conversion and some modernisation of the original "pig shed".
To try and cater for all members’ interests the club has recently completed it's new N gauge layout, "SumWare". A 25ft x 2.5ft layout for exhibition use which recently made it's debut at our own exhibition. |
